Poetry Wednesday: My Moonlight Mermaid.

My Moonlight Mermaid

She lives beneath the turbulent sea

I have seen her briefly and fleetingly

Her long and golden locks of hair

Her skin so pale it glistens fair

It was on a voyage many years ago

I spied her shape, on a rock below

We were anchored on the island side

Of a far off land both high and wide

Naught wind, just gentle rocking

I strode the deck, as my ship sat docking

Around the port side and starboard too

I wandered that night, admiring the view

Of brilliant stars across the night sky

And moon beams shimmering on water nearby

Looking into the distance and out towards sea

On rocky outcrop in shadow, she be

First I noticed her hair, a golden glow

Then her skin glistening, like sun on snow

I reached for my spectacles, sitting in my top pocket

Placing them on my face, twas a sight I’d never regret

Her fish tale silver and all curled around

As she sat on that rock, not making a sound

Just reclining back and combing her hair

Using a pearly shell comb, rhythmically, with care

I was taken a back by this beautiful apparition

I was not one who believed in superstition

A sailors lot can be lonely and long

We all know the stories, of a sirens song

Who could I call on this graveyard shift?

This sighting was all mine, only my gift

I watched her for what, seemed like hours

Mesmerised by her mystic powers

As my night watch on deck, drew to a close

Sailors shouting and moving below, as they arose

I turned my attention back to the rocky outcrop

Wishing the daylight would retreat and stop

She shone and sang for me, all through the night

And left me, a poor sailor, in total delight.

Eyes and body holding back sleepiness, I yawned

Gone was my mermaid, as morning dawned.

oh me, only those who live in soliloquy shall ever know the impact a sailor has over a mermaid, or could that be vice-versa?

  10. I love mermaids because of the mystery behind them. You never know, just by looking at them, if they are going to be good or evil. What you've described are the reasons they are so wonderful. Thanks for sharing your love of mermaids with us.
