Poetry Wednesday :Carl Sagan....What would he say? Sending Music to the Heavens.

Carl Sagan....What would he say?  I am bringing over an article from Yahoo, I wrote earlier this year and hope that you enjoy it.

Today I read about Calling out into space from the planet Earth and how this exercise might cause problems in the future, if it is misinterpreted by aliens as a threat.
Aliens could misinterpret earth's classic songs as declarations of war if they are recklessly broadcast into space, some scientists say.

NASA broadcast a Beatles song, Across the Universe, towards the North Star, in the hope it would be noticed by extra-terrestrial beings.

My reactions to this news are, if we have neighbours in other galaxies or anywhere out in space then why would they interpret a song or wave of melody as a threat? Surely their advancement to live where they live and receive our Earth Songs from where ever it is they hear them from, does not necessarily mean that there would be an over reaction on their behalf. I feel it would create more of a curiosity.
But scientists have urged NASA to be more cautious, saying aliens could misinterpret the song, and even take it as a battle cry. What are your thoughts?

HMMMMM!

"Before sending out even symbolic messages, we need an open discussion about the potential risks," New Scientist magazine reported Dr Douglas Vakoch of the SETI Institute as saying.

Professor Barrie Jones of Open University said: "the chances are slight, but the consequences would be huge — the end of life on Earth".
"If they have the technology to cross interstellar space to reach us, they will be so much in advance of us humans that there is nothing we could do to resist them," he said.

SETI — the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence — has been listening to the skies for the last 20 years.

The program uses radio telescopes to scan for any messages or noises that may indicate the existence of life on other planets.

Scientist Ainin De Horta, from the SETI Australia Centre, said the there could be dangers in broadcasting songs into deep space.

But he didn't think it would lead to an intergalactic war.

"I think the chances are pretty unlikely that it'll lead to an alien invasion, but I do think there is a point that this should be discussed by the whole world, because who knows what'll happen," Mr De Horta said.

"I think it's highly unlikely that this message will cause a reaction, and that it'll cause a reaction in our lifetime."

Radio waves travel through space at the speed of light or nearly 300,000km per second.

The first radio transmission, sent in the 1920s, would have travelled nearly 90 light years by now.

Well my theory here would be, "It ain’t necessarily so" because possibly our neighbours both near and far in space across the universe would have the same curiosity as we would have when and if we also receive or detect strange noises across our own galaxy.

If you would like to know more from a scientific view point then let me introduce you to the Carl Sagan Portal…. http://www.carlsagan.com/

Carl Sagan might have had other ideas and to read his portal on the net I recommend you click above and go for some time travel and interesting reading.

The Beatles Lyrics for "Across The Universe."

Words are flying out like
endless rain into a paper cup
They slither while they pass
They slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow waves of joy
are drifting thorough my open mind
Possessing and caressing me

Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

Images of broken light which
dance before me like a million eyes
That call me on and on across the universe
Thoughts meander like a
restless wind inside a letter box
they tumble blindly as
they make their way across the universe

Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

Sounds of laughter shades of life
are ringing through my open ears
exciting and inviting me
Limitless undying love which
shines around me like a million suns
It calls me on and on across the universe

Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Jai guru deva
Jai guru deva

  7. . . we think it quite conceivable that an alien culture out there might be based
exclusively ( for a myriad reasons/non-reasons ) on dat territorial acquisition
((( NO MATTER HOW TECHNOLOGICALLY OR SPIRITUALLY ADVANCED )))

  9. ..everything needs law 'n' order - even (as BIG Science now reveals - with unrestrained pagan glee and billion$ in international funding) cHaOs it is surely MOTIVATION (that which moves inert mass) based on cultural expectancy that is the program in social group machines and other molecular frisbees..

    thank God for . .

  10. Excellent. Having once toured the satellite array for the SETI program, you did a wonderful job presenting it. Thank you.

  11. Sagan was such a visionary and sadly missed. Ahh..the wonders of the universe! Thanks for prompting the mind into thinking about "what if?"

  14. A friend of mine believes in things like this. He believes in the same as some of the ones you mentioned. If we're ever "visited" by an alien life form they're going to think we're hicks from the sticks LOL. They're going to be so far more advanced in logic, thinking, and emotions we're not going to be able to understand where they're coming from because we live in a world so unintelligently built. Though he really thinks they won't have emotions because of their advancement, I'm hoping they do to be able to reflect on where THEY came from to understand where we still ARE.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us!

  15. ..do we need emotions to reflect? :D

  16. very much depends WHAT music is being shot out there for alien 'ears' to pick up. There are SOME songs I could think of that I would interpret as a threat is I were bombarded with them!!

But not of course the beatles songs, music and lyrics, they are all most un-threat like. Especially this one that is beautiful so thank you for sharing.

  18. Running over for a read and then it's back to my flood mess.
This is so extraordinary in so many ways. They are validating the possibility, the very strong possibility of life "out there." No one denies it. Sagan, a Brooklynite, near me, cool. He was so incredibly interesting, fascinating, brilliant, a visionary. Real homage to him, to the Beatles, to possibilities and to the universe we just can't comprehend.

    Kudos.

And can't wait for your botanical garden pics. :)
