Presenting the Mandolin and it's Beautiful Melody. A mandolin is a musical instrument in the lute family (plucked, or strummed). It is descended from the mandore, a soprano member of the lute family. It has a body with a teardrop-shaped soundboard, or one which is essentially oval in shape, with a soundhole, or soundholes, of varying shapes which are open and are not decorated with an intricately carved grille like the Baroque era mandolins.

There are some musical instruments that it really sounds weird to say that you play them. (And, no, I don't intend to retract one iota of that convoluted syntax; it fits right in.)
Take the tuba. Please. A man who plays the tuba is so embarassed about it, that he will stammer out a euphemism: "I play... low brass... uh...you know...the...tuba...". A woman who plays the tuba won't even whisper the word. She'll usually say, "What!? Why they told me that this was a harp! Oh, those heartless bastards!"
"I play ophicleide" will stop any conversation --and then empty the room quickly since many people confuse that word with the zoological term for whatever the thing was that burst out of that guy's chest in Alien.
It's not so much that the word "mandolin" sounds strange. After all, it just means "small mandola" and who could find fault with that? (If you can't wait, go to the bottom.) It's just that the instrument has sort of disappeared from our general musical consciousness.

ReplyDeleteI actually own one a Russian Mandolin. I was going to learn how to play it, I was playing a steel string guitar at that time and was interested in other steel stringed instruments. I played around with it, learned part of the song Mandolin Rain on it and then didn't do much with it after that.

ReplyDeleteI will be looking forward to your assestment of Captain Corelli's Mandolin. The Mandolin has always been one of the more expressive instruments that seemingly speaks out to one sort of in a nocturnal way. This has been one instrument nearly lost along the way, lost in a sense of when considered what is used in most music these days. This was an enjoyable post. I did a youtube search and found some very good mandolin players, but chose not to embed any here, and there were some embeds were disabled to begin with.
