10 Canoes A Very Special Movie.

Movie Monday

Ten Canoes.

I saw this movie quite sometime ago and although one would call it a documentary come story, it is a wonderful movie to see if you are interested in the culture of the Australian aborigines and their dream time. The story line taken here from the Ten Canoes Home site goes like this:

One hundred and fifty spears, three wives…..trouble.

With a script like this and filmed entirely in the Great Centre of Northern Australian, and with Actors gathered from the local indigenous community using all their skills and knowledge, this has to be an eye opener for everyone and a trip back into yesteryear

The synopsis from the movie is as follows…

'Bout time to tell you a story, eh? Then I'll tell you one of ours...

It is longtime ago. It is our time, before you other mob came from cross the ocean...longtime before then. The rains been good and ten of the men go on the swamp, to hunt the eggs of gumang, the magpie goose. One of the men, the young fella, has a wrong love, so the old man tell him a story...a story of the ancient ones, them wild and crazy ancestors who come after the spirit time, after the flood that covered the whole land...

It's a good story, this story I'm gonna be tellin' you 'bout the ancient ones. There's more wrong love in this story, and plenty spears too, and plenty wives...too many wives if you ask me...a beautiful young one and a bit of a jealous one and the older wise one and even more wives than that.

And there's plenty happens in this story...there's a stranger comes and one of them wives goes missin' and there's a man with a belly big as a mountain. There's sorcery and magic too, and a wrong spear in the wrong body, and more spears and bad spirits. And even that's not everything that's happening in this story.

Ahh, you gotta see this story of mine cause it'll make you laugh, even if you're not a blackfella. Might cry a bit too eh? But then you laugh some more...cause this story is a big true story of my people. True thing.

Press kit

There is a small video of the movie on the home page and I think even though the story is narrated and also in native dialogue because the actors do speak their own native tongue in the film, persevere. It is truly delightful viewing and funny too!!

This is a movie chosen from my favourites Milli2007

  4. I have been trying to veiw this blog on your Y360 but it won't allow me. I always wanted to watch this movie, I remember somewhere in the begining of this year it was playing at the Palace and the Nova cinema in the city and I very well remember how I had to give up to my friend's wishes to watch another film. Nevertheless, it seems to be a great story and I will have to get the dvd of it soon.I am interested to see what they say about the aboriginee community, I don't know much about them, have seen the aboriginal art in the state gallery and I was in awe. I shall check this out for sure. Thanks for this Milli :)

  5. Such a shame about yahoo not opening I had placed another video there different to the one I had here. However because Yahoo is so unreliable at the moment i have decided to place the other you tube video into this post as well. It will give you more of an idea as it is all from the film. thank you Shankar for visiting and I do believe that your wife and yourself would love aa visit to our theatres here.
AJ you will love it i know and I did hear from a friend in the states that he saw it from the netflix collection of movies.
Freddy I hope you get to see it too on DVD if you cant see it on the big screen. the big-screen did it justice though.
Hello Dear Neighbour, Oh what a shame that you did not see it. Not to worry I think now you will make the effort and be totally thrilled that you have done so. I am so fascinated by our indigenous people and am always happy to see them promoted in a positive light.

This is a wonderful and fascinating old 16mm movie of an Aborigine who expertly makes a wira out of the bark of a tree!
