Petroglyphs New Caledonia
These Mysteries Still Remain
Located in The South Pacific is the island of New Caledonia.
I was very privileged to have visited Noumea a few years ago.
The Capital City of New Caledonia, Noumea is a very interesting blend of both native and French influences.
Some of those with whom I travelled had the same idea as me and wanted to get to the heart of the island and see more of it with the one day we had allocated to get off the beaten track so to speak.
A tour was planned and as we all boarded the large van it became apparent that this was to become a new experience and learning curve for many of us.
Our tour guide was an Englishman who was married to a native lady and father to a small brood of very beautiful looking mixed cultured children.
A man of the world he was a very humorous guide who loved good food and the imported French wines available at a very low cost when purchased from the local super market.
On our way out this day he stopped to purchase some of this top drop and as would have it, this load of typical Aussie women were out of the van, losing no time what so ever, stacking up on a few essentials at the more realistic prices the super market charged, over the more expensive resort prices.
Once we were all aboard it was a wondrous several hours full of sight seeing, morning tea in a natural environment with native workers from an adjoining farm joining us as they spread their picnic rug and tucked into French sticks and other local fair. Also wondrous was our lunching experience.
High up in the mountains it was a very special affair, as we dined on roasted locally caught small wild pig and some amazing local vegetables cooked to perfection which the local ladies had prepared for us at this private and very beautiful home, come restaurant.
Of course we drank some of the French wine with our meal too, supplied by our very own connoisseur of the best French wine, our driver.
Other delightful experiences and fun moments ensued as we packed so much into this fantastic day. But you all want a mystery from me and it is now that I shall explain to you...
The Mystery of the Petro glyphs of New Caledonia.
Travelling along merrily with our guide enthralling us with his knowledge and sense of frivolous fun, we were driving down a narrow road when he interrupted his flow to explain that we were about to stop and view what remains a great mystery to this location and it's peoples, even to this day.
We ladies wondered where he was leading us as we alighted from the van and trampled the verge at the side of the road until he stopped and pointed to an amazing sight set into the stones beneath out feet.
There in the stone were circles perfectly formed and many of them too. Were they a trick of nature we asked or are they man made?
I had my new camera handy but not really knowing how to use it properly I took photos of some of the circles near my feet.
Not the best, but still the circles are visible.
As we all alighted back into the van with questions abounding, our guide was somewhat at a loss to explain to us fully about these amazing discoveries which were first noted back in 1895 by two Frenchmen, although they are thought to have been in existence since 300AD or there abouts.
More of these markings have been found on rocks in Europe as well and seem to be connected to the New Caledonia's Petro Glyphs by their apparent likeness.
I was fascinated by all this new knowledge about the petro glyphs that I did some research on them from home and have left the links below for those of you who love a mystery.
Are the markings or rock art as they are also called man made by precision artists and bear in mind there are indeed many of these phenomena to be found in New Caledonia, or is this the incredible work of nature. Mysteries like this will remain a secret no doubt for some time to come but I do have my own theory.
We are not alone in this vast Universe and one day maybe we will all find out the answers to the Big Mysteries still remaining to be solved here and far beyond.
I hope you have enjoyed my slightly longer article this week.

ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting blog, MIlli! Thanks for giving me the chance to learn something I totally ignored...
ReplyDeleteI've heard of the petroglyphs, but I've never seen them in person. That must have been fun. Thank you for the extra link of information, too.
ReplyDeleteI love learning new things, especially if they are old. I loved your article from your trip to the circles. A wonderful discription... makes me want to travel. Thank you for the link too.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had a very interesting and fascinating trip. Indeed, one could just wonder what the circles mean.
ReplyDeleteI have always thought it was pretty arrogant of us to believe that those of us on this one small planet in one small corner of the vastness of space are the only sentient beings who have ever been here. Too many totally inexplicable things like the seemingly random way things line up in South America until you get into orbit and suddenly realize you are looking at a huge airport with a main runway and side runways that lead out to it. So big that it can't be seen from earth. So precise that there is no other possible explanation for what it once was.
ReplyDeleteThe chances of this happening by accident or by erosion, or any natural forces is questionable. If it was made by man, what was the purpose?
Love the story and the photo!
