The Older Woman
A woman’s lot can be hard to bare
And sometimes there seems, no one to care
As she searches at great length to find
Some fragments of her brilliant mind
Exposed and seemingly beaten by age
Her reactions often do outrage
The very people she loves most
“A sensible woman” they used to boast
“Domestic, complying, satisfied, was she
Now mood swings, tension, irritable she be”
Take heart ladies, this period of upheaval does not last
As it signals to a woman “Let Go of the Past”
What was once, is no longer needed
And I am here to tell you, that you are not! superseded
You see, out of this period of loss will ensue
The time of your life, when you can be you
Of new heights to reach and feelings to share
With those of us who, undeniably care
So brighten your life in all the ways that you wish
And recreate yourself, into a most delectable dish
Of wit and compassion, and intelligent beauty
To love and restore yourself, this is your duty
Resume your life with ego intact
Because an older woman is! Beautiful!
And this is a fact.

I
The beginning of a series of paintings on women by Karen Canton
In the hour of shifting shadows
When the moon has flown on by
And hands full of satin ribbons
Are tossed against the sky
I slip from my covers of darkness
Step into a pool of gold
And bathe myself with sunlight
Until once again I am whole.
Then I slip on a dress of society
Twist my hair till its neatly curled
Paint my lips with propriety
And go out to face the world.
I will continue more with this wonderful artist in my Art Sunday Tour

Gorgeous colors, feel like I'm in a garden.Your poem is wonderful, true and a great reminder. I am finally "there," years of work behind me, son about to graduate from college. I am blessed to still be here and to be able to live your poem, resuming my life with my ego intact, and that's a fact! Here I go!
ReplyDeleteGood job, girl!
Beautiful poem taking back to olden days and colorful painting by Karen Canton, I like both and thank you for sharing. You have already visited my poem and made a beautiful comment. Thanks a lot Milli.
ReplyDeleteA really beautiful background you have here and fitting for this particular piece ... for nowhere else can beauty be found than in the windows of the soul through the eyes and mind of an older woman who has just begun to see the light of living. I really enjoyed reading this one (three times no less). Thanks 8=)

I love the wonderful inspiring words of your poem. It's only over when they shovel on the soil I say:) Good on ya Milli.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the reminder.
ReplyDeleteOlder woman is a Keeper.
I feel as each day goes, I grow into myself. And your words confirm that feeling.
Wonderful wonderful you are so talented-also your wallpaper is delic. I can smell them when I close my eyes.
ReplyDeleteVery good poetry that reminds us all that the best is not behind us but with us as we grow into ourselves. I think it's an important reminder since we are regularly assaulted by youth pills, foods, creams, et al.
ReplyDeleteHad to come back for another reading 8=)
ReplyDeleteThank you Sue for the wonderful words of wisdom from a Beautiful woman herself.

ReplyDeleteThank you for this empowering work! I really enjoy the celebration of being female beyond the media induced drivel of youth & appearance and you have touched on the real beauty of ALL woman which lies within the soul! Bravo!
ReplyDeleteOh, you really have uplifted my mood and feelings, dear Milli!!! I was overwhelmed with the work pressure lately and trying to find the thread of my living again (you see, when I am obliged to set my favorite activities aside, I feel half-living and outcast!...), and you've opened the window to a sequence, to a continuity of a woman's life!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!!! :)
