Poetry Wednesday: Look At Me.

Look At Me.

Look At Me.

Look at me?

Yes look at me

What do you see

A woman, female,

Gentle, femininity

Perfection at any cost

You see that in me

Giving, affectionate

Nurturing, sensual, soft

Paying the price

Now my soul is lost

Hating this skin

For the trouble it brings

For me, and this child within

We pay for all sin

He who cares naught

As I tear at my outer

Fear, anger, outrage

At the lies I was told

I hate him, I hate him

Turning hate inwards

Tearing at my skin

Unleash this nightmare

Aids will ravish us both

There is no escape

Ah! but wait, was there

Something you missed

Did you not see

The determination, resilience

Undeniable, Strength

Residing deep inside

Of Me!

Look at Me?

  3. Poetry Wednesday tour starts on Wednesday and I am early. I will link the post when our friend Sans Souci opens the Poetry Lounge. Until then please feel free to read and comment. I know this is a poem that is not on the light side n fact I had to pull it out from within and place myself in the position of a woman in this situation. Undeniably women are strongest when they are aware. Here is a little from the site above....
HIV-positive mother and child in Tanzania: Low economic and social status, along with other factors, leave women more vulnerable than men to infection.

  4. I just left your link at the lounge, not to worry!
This is wonderful, dear Milli, the picture is haunting the words tear at me as she tears at her skin in shame. Shame for being herself, how did we become this?? This people, this disease.
(Serendiptiously, a friend just asked me for a donation to an AIDS foundation and I just sent some money. People don't deserve this. Mothers and children especially.
Thanks for the reminder, Mill, and the beautiful work.
    Love,
    Sue

  8. I HAVE LOOKED VERY DEEP INTO herself YES HER REAL
    self
should one call her a sinner?
should one call her a sufferer?
should one call her "she reaps what she sowed"?
sure am i THAT the man behind is also a carrier?
one man for one girl; one mom and one dad for a child!
    please is some one hearing?
thanks for your visit to mine

  10. :). The last verse sounds like a Gong. Strength is often not percieved through the masks of resilence, humility, honesty. Thank you for nudging us to see the unseen.

  14. What a strong and empowering work this is...and so very poignant given the masses of woman who have AIDS. I recently watched a program about the numbers of children in Africa who are AIDS orphans . The words to describe this devastation of AIDS escape me.
Thank you for this lovely piece and for the cause it was written.

  15. Lovely poem with a powerful message. "Don't judge a book by it's cover." Looks are always misleading. Discover the truth by looking beneath the surface.

    Thanks for sharing this!

  19. I wish to thank each and everyone who has come and read this verse of mine and especially those who have left a comment. The comments have been thoughtful and very much appreciated by myself.

When we write a poem or verse it is humbling to say the least when our words strike a cord in the reader and I feel from the comments left here that your understanding of the subject matter is to be highly commended and like me you will do your bit however that be possible to empower, the downtrodden and disadvantaged. Awareness is a good start.
    Hugs from Milli.
