Today was Our Australia Day 26TH of January 2008 and celebrations were going on everywhere around this unique and diverse country I call my home.
From early this morning there were many special breakfasts being held with New Australian Citizens being officially welcomed into our societies.
Here in my own small neck of the woods as we call it, there was an important stage of the Tour Down Under being run and many people were busying themselves in preparation. It is estimated 85,000 people turned out along the 147 kilometre track to view the international and local cyclists involved in this Southern Hemisphere counterpart [ Noun counterpart (plural counterparts)
- something that resembles something else, or has corresponding functions or characteristics
- either of two parts that fit together, or complement one another ]
of what is called the Tour De France in Europe.
The day was perfect although a little warm 35 deg. cel. for such a slogging and gruelling ride, however these riders are super fit and seem to take the ride in their strides.
The ride today went past our local beaches and it also went on local roads passing through vineyards and hay paddocks. It then meandered along the road leading up one of the steepest hills in the district.
I took many great photos of the local area which is referred to as the Wine Coast because of the hills, vines and sea all being in close proximity to each other.
Yet again I had so much trouble trying to pick my best shot for the day to share here, when I found this photo of the lone motor cycle police officer sitting on his Bike at a T junction in his official capacity as a race patrol officer. His umbrella up for some absolutely well needed shade and the hills and paddocks working as his back drop. I pulled over to the side of the road and took two photos from my car. This is the second shot where I called out to him to smile for the camera LOL.
I hope you get some idea of our interesting area from this unique photo. Picture Perfect tour here.

PS. I have left a link to the official photos of the race and they are well worth seeing for more understanding of the area.
Please click the image above to bring it to full size.
Now added this slide show. Please enjoy. I did not post much content in it about the riders as it is more about My Area for this Around the World in 3 Days theme. Milli.
Hiya Milli

ReplyDeletewow, this is cool!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a wonderful area with lots of fun involved. Happy Australia Day & Happy Weekend to You!
ReplyDeleteIt is not a leg of the French tour, it is, in its own right, the tour d'Australee'....
ReplyDeleteIt is the largest bike race held outside France's tour, attracting almost all the French tour's entrants....
It is the largest race in the Southern hemisphere.............................
Sorry, just trying to correct your mis-conception, is all........
Nice shot ! Real Cool~ heehee though the temp. is 36 deg hot
ReplyDeletethere is only one tour de france...the others are all upstarts and mostly training rides for the one and only...and there are no 'legs' outside of France
ReplyDeleteas for large...In this little neck of the woods we have a ride that draws 5000 riders..it's not a race but not everyone can ride like Lance but watching isn't acceptable
LOL cool picture!
ReplyDeleteGreat shot! Happy Australia Day!
ReplyDeletethis looks quite exotic to me.. :)
ReplyDeleteI have clarified the situation in this post I hope. I was not indicating this as the Tour De France at all.I have left the link here and in the post as well for anyone who wishes to read the official site and learn more.
ReplyDeleteThe Tour Down Under is the first stop in World Cycling after being granted UCI ProTour status - the first race outside of Europe to be given this ranking.
Elite international athletes race around South Australia over a week in January in a bid to win the right to wear the Ochre Leaders Jersey.
