This is a light hearted post about an Adelaide and State Heritage Icon called a Balfours Frog Cake. Rita did a post today about her childhood memories and part of the post was about the tastes we enjoyed whilst growing up. I remembered the froggy cake made by an Adelaide bakery that now is no longer as we knew it. Even though the bakery is not as it used to be, the little froggy cakes that were invented by Balfours have become so well loved that they are a legend and officially noted in our States History.
When we were young we would go into Adelaide and as we walked down Rundle Street, as it was called before it became a mall, a close encounter with a cup of tea and a froggy cake was to be our reward for tired aching feet, after all the pushing and squeezing through the crowds of shoppers. Those days this was a main shopping area in the heart of Adelaide and we had no Large Shopping Centres around our neighbourhoods. We would catch a train to Adelaide and go shopping for major purchases.
The little cakes were coloured in fondant icing in the colour of green.
Of course frogs are green arenât they? Or maybe they are pink or brown representing Chocolate or Strawberry. It was all about choosing your favourite colour for the day.
South Australiaâs culinary icons frog cakes.
Frog cakes are described by Balfours as âdelicious sponge cakes topped with a special butter cream and enrobed in colour fondantâ.

The Frog Cake is the âBalfours Mascotâ and has been used in promoting the culture of the State to international visitors by both local and national organisations. Introduced during the 1920's when tearooms were the height of fashion in Adelaide, the Frog Cake was originally made with green fondant, the chocolate and pink versions were introduced later.
So there you have it a sweet icon and still available today. Let me invite you all to your favourite beverage and a South Aussie Icon Called a Balfours Frog Cake. However be warned these are sweet treats.
