There is a wedding coming up in a few weeks time and of course everything is shaping up beautifully. I will tell you more as the day becomes nearer and I will share more of the details here then too!
Everything has been arranged except one very important detail and I am asking for your help with this..
The best man and the groomsmen have asked me to ask everyone who visitâs my post, to leave in the comments section some really good telegrams or ditties.
Even short letters to be read out at the reception. I know this is an Aussie custom and wonder what people do in other countries. We have such a great laugh here with these although some are also congratulatory and personal wishes.
I have written a short ditty below and this is the type of ditty we would have written up as a telegram. These days it would probably come in as an email.
For anyone who does not know about the garter worn by the bride on the day of her wedding here is a brief explanation.
The Garter ~ The symbolism of the garter can trace it's origin to the convergence of two totally unrelated traditions. In ancient Jewish society, fidelity was symbolized by a blue ribbon that the bride would wear on her wedding day. Later in Britain the "bawdy" custom ofâflinging the stocking" became popular. After allowing the newlyweds to enter the bridal chamber, the guests would gain entry and snatch one of the brideâs stockings. Much to the couples disdain the revelers would then begin throwing the stocking at the bride from the foot of the bed. It was thought that who ever was closest to hitting the brideâs nose would be the next to marry. In an attempt at modesty over the centuries, to prevent the guests from physically removing her stocking brides started arming themselves with an extra one that the groom could throw. Thankfully the custom has changed so that now the ritual is performed at the reception instead of the bedroom.
There was a New Bride from Loxton
Who took off her garters and put socks on
The passion was nigh as her groom made a sigh
'Twas sleep for The New Groom from Loxton.
My comments box awaits you all for some fun and frivolity.
